#BOSUStrong Bootcamp Babes

Today we're talking about workout buddies and our favorite partner exercises with BOSU and Fit Approach. And how appropriate that it's also #womancrushwednesday! I girl-crush on these sweaty ladies so hard!

As much as I do usually like to work out solo, there are so many fun exercises to do with a friend! I love my group at bootcamp with Jamie and Tasha! We all sweat, run, lift, burpee, and crunch together! It definitely helps to get through the burn-inducing moves by motivating each other.

Of course I always love a good yoga pose picture with friends, whether it's after bootcamp or a yoga class or out hiking...

What I love about working out with buddies is that you can do exercises together OR be exercising together. Sometimes it's helpful to have someone push you, motivate you, high five you while you're "playing" in plank. Sometimes it's awesome just to have company alongside you.

Abbie loves to help during bootcamp too! :)

Mountain Booty #BOSUStrong

Share this fun mad-lib on your blog to announce the start of the BOSU and Sweat Pink #BOSUStrong challenge and encourage your readers, family, friends to join in on the fun! If you don’t like our mad-lib, that’s totally fine, we’d love to have you announce the start of the challenge in another way that suits you! ;)

Week 3: My 5 Fave Stretches and 3 Tips for Toning your BOOTY!

I can’t believe its already week 3 of the #BosuStrong challenge, time flies when  you’re having fun! Last week we focused on balance and I was proud of myself for crowing it up on the BOSU. This week its all about stretching and toning – so make sure you join in on the fun!

Since we’re talking about stretching, here are 5 of my all time favorite stretches:

I love to stretch my legs by doing pigeon pose.
My favorite total body stretch is dancer's and chopasana variation of half moon. You get the quad, hip flexor, hamstring, shoulder, pec, heart opener/backbend all in one pose!.

I swear when I do splits, it feels like my hamstrings are solid rocks, but in a #hurtsogood kind of way.
I stretch my mind by attempting to meditate.
I try to stretch out of my comfort zone by deepening my heart opening- working my forearms down in wheel.

And if you’re looking for a great way to tone your booty, here are my fave 3 tips (tricks, advice, words of wisdom, etc):

For years I resented my booty and thighs. I wanted slender, the stereotypical runner's body. But when I run (and hike and ski and play field hockey), I get muscular. Biggest tip, keep it in perspective! I'll never look like Gisele OR Kim. I'd rather have a booty (which I love now!) and be able to go run 3 miles than fit into a smaller size pants. OWN IT!

Lunges and squats. Lunges and squats. Lunges and squats.

In Colorado, we called it "Mountain Booty." Go out hiking and skiing. Your legs get SO muscular!

So I want to know - are you #BOSUStrong? Copy and paste the above, fill it in and make it your own and then tag me in it and share with your friends! Let’s all be #BOSUSTRONG.

BALANCE! Theme of the…decade?

As we end the second week of the #BOSUStrong challenge, I'm filled with reflection on the theme we've talked about: balance.

There's the pure physical element of balance, which I of course love. Balance is a huge part of our every day lives: to work on handstands and forearmstands, to #stopdropandyoga on hikes and runs and everywhere else, to essentially just make it around on two feet (or two hands ;) ) half the time. Balance is incorporated in pretty much every physical exertion.

But let's get into the other side of balance. The idea of balance in your life. In high school I was really goal-oriented on studying hard and getting in to Chapel Hill. Done. In college I was really goal-oriented on working to get into law school. I interned at different firms every year, sometimes multiple at a time. I was on the dean's list, had two majors and a minor, was part of a pre-law frat, was researching law schools… I was on the right(?) track. When I couldn't find an internship for the summer before my senior year beyond a week-long shadowing of an immigration attorney at a huge firm in Atlanta (this was post-recession when all the college grads that couldn't find jobs and went to law school were interning and trying to find jobs), I took a NOLS course. For a month I lived in the woods. I hiked up mountain peaks with a 45-pound pack on my back with all my food and gear I needed for 18 days, and paddled on a river for 10 days. I had two pairs of underwear and three shirts, no facial cleanser or tweezers or razor or mascara, no coffee shop with foamy lattes, no Facebook (this was pre-Instagram, but I totally would have missed that too!). I had no deodorant. Or wine. Or toilet paper. For a month. And I had the absolute time of my life!
After returning to the "real" world, and shadowing that attorney for a week with my epic Chaco tan still gracing my feet, I started to doubt my path. Did I really want to be a lawyer? I was on the track for three hard years at law school followed by grueling hours as an associate at a firm, assuming I would have been able to find a job in a saturated field. My hippie-lawyer father convinced me to take some time off, and not by interning at another firm like I'd been planning. But to move out West and ski and travel and live. Though living in a ski town and working in the tourism industry wasn't sustainable for me forever, it taught me something very important. The idea of working to live rather than living to work (also the lifestyle I love and appreciate in the locals in Costa Rica). I worked hard, and at multiple jobs, but I had time almost every day to do something active outside, to have wine with friends, to take epic vacations.

People ask me about my thoughts on law school now. Well… It's been 4 and a half years since I graduated from college, and law school is NOT on the horizon. (And a lot of lawyers cheer me when I say that!) I've talked through many of the motivators for successful lawyers to go through the hells of law school and long hours of being firm newbies, and I don't really have any of them. I would have been a good lawyer, but… My years in Colorado taught me that I value a balanced (and fit) lifestyle. I want to work hard and make money, but not if it means not seeing the light of day for days at a time. I want to enjoy my work, but to have passions outside of the office. I want to have the balance between finding success in a career field, but also living my life to the absolute fullest! To not look back and wish I hadn't wasted years of my life under fluorescent lighting for a job I wasn't passionate about.

The thing about balance, much like the Scales of Justice symbol of the law, is that there's a fine line on which you're always teeter-tottering. Fitness is super important to me, and a huge counter to sitting behind my computer for hours at a time. But I also have a tendency to being too active and too hard on my body. Rest days and self-care have become a huge part of my routine. Well, I'm trying hard for them to be. Time with friends, eating, drinking, hiking, shooting the shit, is a major part of my life. But I need to remember to have "me" time. To have quiet time in my space reading, doodling, blogging, watching movies, or even hitting the trails by myself.

I want to do all the things all the time! And I think it's totally doable. But it's all about the balance. You make your decision, deal with a little natural "what if" doubt, and then enjoy where you're at!

Happy Forearm Friday!

I ran. So I'm a runner. Right?

It's been 5 years since I've run a race. Since I've gone through the rigors of a training plan. Even since I've played organized sports. Now I hesitate to call myself a "runner." Why?! Reading Ariana's debunking running myths post yesterday helped reiterate something I know but struggle with accepting: that just because I'm not training for a race (or run every day or run over 5 miles every time I go out), doesn't mean I'm not a runner.

I played field hockey and basketball in middle and high school, and ran a season of track in high school for training. In college I ran two half marathons, and a number of 5k's. I played club field hockey, and we practiced 3 times a week. So I spent plenty of time running for a number of years. I still used air quotes when I said I was a "runner."

UNC Club Sports 5k, 2008
Half Marathon, Lisbon, Portugal, Spring 2009
Half Marathon, Wilmington, NC, Fall 2010
My last official race.
I completed my NOLS course (which included 18 days of backpacking) in the summer of 2010, and went almost straight into half marathon training. Not a good idea. My bad knee started acting up while backpacking, and kept acting up during training. Never quite felt the same. I stopped running longer distances. After graduation, I took a hiatus from running. I did my yoga teacher training (aka 8 hours of yoga a day for three weeks straight!), swam laps a lot, and did some physical therapy. I knew I was moving to a ski town, and so I needed to get my knee ready for it!

Two years later, I spent all my time in the Highcountry hiking and skiing, but no running. The altitude and the mountainous terrain on top of a no-bueno knee didn't seem like the ideal running situation. I loved running still, and did it anytime I traveled, but couldn't bring myself to run in Breckenridge. After my third season during which I discovered skinning (skiing uphill, yes, uphill) and skiing almost 90 days that season, I entered some pretty intense physical therapy. My amazing therapist worked me over three times a week for many months, and got me back to running safely and pain-free! My last summer in Breckenridge was spent trail running 3.5-10 miles multiple times a week. I ended up training a bit with my roommate who was running a half marathon at Copper Mountain, but didn't do the race. (Don't ask me why I didn't! I have no idea.)

My first run in Breckenridge! July, 2014
Running is now back as a staple form of workout/therapy in my life. And I'm loving it! Why I still hesitate to sign up for races again or even call myself a runner, I have no idea. But Ariana makes a good point, who cares if you're running races. It doesn't matter your distance, purpose, pace, or anything else. If you're out pounding pavement (or treadmill, or beach, or trail, or…), you're a runner! Doesn't matter that the closest I've gotten to a race in years is running with Jamie and at the North Portland Run Club (the one time I joined them), or the furthest I've gone in months is 7 miles (and that's definitely not every time I go running).

This morning I hit the trails. I taught a 7am power vinyasa class, will be teaching another at 5pm, and attending a DJ yoga class after that. This is after teaching two classes on Tuesday and going to bootcamp, and going to Wednesday Burncycle spin class and teaching FLY last night. After two intense activity days, and a third on the horizon, I still wanted to get out in the woods and sweat a little. I ran 1.5 miles. Why do I want to use air quotes when I tell people I went on a trail run this morning? I was running and I was on the trail. Ipso facto, I went on a trail run. No, it wasn't very far. No, I didn't break any records. But I listened to my body, knowing my neck/shoulder was starting to hurt again and my quads were sore from the previous two days of activity. That should be more important. I still got out, did what I wanted to do. I ran. So I'm a runner.

Follow the adventures with me! @lizwilsonyoga

Balancing Satisfaction and Change, and Watering the Grass

The theme for my classes the past few days, based on the reading below, is all about the grass being greener on the other side. Always. For whatever f***ed up phenomenon.

"Single people want relationships, settle people wonder if they're missing out on something, traveling types miss stability, stable ones are restless, old friends want new friends, new friends miss old friends, and basically almost everyone my age has some dangling worry trailing around after them everywhere that they're somehow not doing everything, that what they're doing is not altogether the right thing, that they are missing out. … Do not be ashamed. The doubt is natural, and everyone you know - yes, even that person - carries it sometimes too. Allow yourself to be peaceful. Allow yourself satisfaction in what you have. If you really don't like it, allow yourself permission to make changes." - Lillian Schneider

Reading this passage in class Monday morning caused a conversation amongst a few of us after class, about the grass being greener on the other side, but also choosing where to water the grass. I think this is an important balance, which Schneider addresses. Sometimes it truly is about choosing to be satisfied with what you have, with where you are, with the decisions you've made. We all have our days where we're fed up with our life. We argue with our partner, are stuck in a rut with our workouts, feel uninspired with work, can't find anything to wear in an overflowing closet. It's about reminding yourself why and how you've gotten to where you are and why that's absolutely the best thing ever.

The balancing act here is doing the serious introspection and discovering when you truly do need to shift things. When it's not about just trying out a new coffee shop or ordering something new off a menu or running a new route, but maybe actually moving to a new city. When it's not just occasional disagreements, but an unhealthy or not-quite-right relationship. When it's not just needing to make an inspiration board for your office, but realizing that maybe you've gotten everything you can out of your job and need to explore some new options.

What's even more frustrating about this is that most of the time it's not just an either/or situation, but rather there are many options to choose from with many factors that need to be weighed. It's not easy, and nothing is stagnant. It takes work to dig deep into your very own psyche and emotions. It's hard to not only figure out what you really need and want, but to take action! How can you make up your mind about something and know that it's the right decision for you today, this year, 5 years from now?!

There's no way you can do everything, let alone do everything at the same time. You can't vagabond around the world after college for a decade, go straight to grad school to go straight into your career and work your ass off to work your way up the ladder, and be a young mother. Those are three prevalent themes in my life at this moment, to travel, to build a career, and (at some point) have a kid or two. But there's no way I could have done/be doing all three of those things. I had to choose where to put my energy. Since I hadn't met The One, and hadn't decided I was passionate about the law, choosing to be a ski bum and traveling wasn't too difficult of one (easy for me to say now). But the other two options retain a "what if…" aura around them. Yes, it's about choosing what grass to water, but it's also about choosing the grass that you want to grow. I could have chosen to "water the grass" at law school and fully dedicate myself to that path, but at the end of the day, did I really want that grass to grow? I decided I wanted to learn about myself by moving, traveling, skiing, yoga-ing… And I sure am loving watching that pile of hay with grass seeds flourishing into a big ole garden!

There's no way to tell the future. There's no way to control the majority of things out there in the universe. The only thing you can do is to try and balance out satisfaction with what you have today with what you may want in the future.

We're talking all about balance this week with BOSU and the Sweat Pink crew for #BOSUStrong! Keep your eyes peeled for another post later this week from me on why balance is the theme of the year, five years, decade for me! 12 ways I get and (try to) stay balanced (and #BOSUStrong!)

6 ways I stay balanced

If you forgot to join me last week for the #BOSUStrong challenge or just weren’t up for the cardio, make sure you join me this week as it’s all about the balance! We’re standing on one leg, lunging, and BOSU squatting our way through the week.

But balance means more than just being able to stand on one leg, it also means being able to do what you love while making healthy choices at the same time. It means putting in the work and still finding time for vegging with The Mindy Project or a trashy romance novel and a glass of wine. Or eating all the chocolate but balancing it out with a salad. Or walking for coffee (workout) and practicing yoga (workout) at home when you can’t make it to the gym.

Here are the 6 ways I stay balanced - what are yours?

I make time for myself by reading during breakfast and in bed before sleep.
My favorite me time is out for a run, practicing yoga, and snuggling watching a movie.
My rule when it comes to a balanced diet is everything in moderation.
I make fitness a priority by writing it in my daily schedule in permanent marker, and usually getting it done in the morning!
When I get stressed or overwhelmed, my go to is hit a hot power vinyasa class and/or go for a run, especially in the woods.
I do make fitness a priority to help my family stay balanced. (My sanity is good for their sanity. :) )

Bonus:
Here are my fave 6 moves to help improve your balance:

  1.  Warrior III
  2.  Core strength building (it's always all about the core!)
  3.  Handstand (it's always all about handstand for me :) )
  4.  Tuck jumps to prep and build strength for handstand
  5.  Dancer pose- it's a backbend, heart opener, shoulder opener, pec stretch, quad stretch, AND you're on one leg! <3
  6. Lunges- great poses to build strength for good balance I love flowing between lunges and standing balance poses

So I want to know - are you #BOSUStrong? Copy and paste the above, fill it in and make it your own and then tag me in it and share with your friends! Let’s all be #BOSUSTRONG.

    All the Cardio #BOSUStrong

The theme for BOSU and Fit Approach's first week of #BOSUStrong was cardio. We ran and walked and biked and mountain climbed and…

Tuesday was about getting the heart rate going, Wednesday we worked it with some burpees, and Thursday was targeting the whole body with cardio. Today, #FreeFriday, is all about showing our favorite way to get our cardio on, with some forearm action thrown in. Well, I'm doing one big fat giant post for the week because, spoiler, I LOVE cardio! In fact I probably do a little too much of it, and not enough yin and restorative activities. But there's nothing quite like that "runner's high," which I've discovered I can also get doing many other endorphin-rush-inducing activities. Read more about my fitness lifestyle here

    RUNNING
Still my favorite cardio, and for many reasons. You can take it everywhere with you! You don't need any equipment or specific place or class or anything. Just some spandex (if that, since I may or may not have had to run in jeans last week… Whatever the bride wants, the bride gets!) and running shoes. It's the best, full body exercise that I have taken with me all over the world on travels, moves, various terrain, with groups, by myself, in races, etc.

    SKIING/SKINNING
Ok, I may have lied before because since I've discovered skinning, that truly has become my favorite cardio. But it's definitely not as versatile as running. You have to have snow and the ability to get to a mountain. But if it's there, oh man, I'm so excited!

    WATER SPORTS: SUP-ING, SURFING, KAYAKING
I actually grew up with water sports, with canoeing with my parents. I love being out on the water. It doesn't even feel like you're working out most of the time! Until that night and the next morning and you feel muscles you didn't even know you had!

    DANCING
I love dancing! Another one where you don't really realize you're working out, even though you're dripping in sweat. But after a night of dancing, whew I'm sore the next day!

    HIKING AND BACKPACKING
This is one of the most satisfying activities for me. I love hiking to a peak or a vista! It's so validating! And backpacking is so much fun! Yes, it's hard hiking with a 50-pound pack on. But the knowledge that you're essentially carrying all of your necessities for the duration of the trip on your back is so empowering!

    FIELD HOCKEY AND BOOTCAMP
I don't play field hockey too much anymore (anybody know if there's a club for old people (aka non students) in Portland?!), so bootcamp with Jamie and the Sweat Pink crew is as close to training for a sport that I've gotten in years. So much fun (and helpful!) to have a supportive group around you as you push yourself to the limit!

    SPINNING
Burn Cycle in Portland is my newfound love! 45 minutes of sweating more than you've ever thought physically possible while being encouraged (and entertained!) by the ripped, bleach-blonde Jessi and jamming out to DJ beats is definitely one of my favorite ways to break a sweat as of late.

    AAAAAND (duh!) YOGA!
No explanation needed. Well… Whether it's in a kick-ass power class, busting poses around town or while out on hikes/runs, stretching while waiting in the airport before boarding my flight or watching a movie… I'm constantly doing yoga. Love! And if you don't think yoga is a cardio workout, check out a power class or try busting a bunch of handstands

BONUS: Some hallowback forearmstand action while out on a trail run!
What are your favorite ways to break a sweat and get your cardio in? Join the fun! #sweatpink #BOSUStrong #FitFamily #ad @bosufitness (Twitter) @bosu_fitness (Instagram) @FitApproach
