#Holidaysweat Fitness Fun!

This week we're talking about keeping fitness FUN with Sweat PinkRun to the Finish, and The Me-Mover!

Sometimes, yeah, I'm pressed for time and have to squeeze in a fast-and-furious workout at the gym. But most of the time I actually want to go run, hike, ski, spin... I used to be a creature of habit at the gym, and looking back on those days makes me shudder out of boredom. How the hell did I go to the gym for an hour to do 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of the same weight-lifting routine and then leave?! How did I do this every day?!

I DO love my gym workouts, I promise!
Amidst these boring gym workouts in high school and college, I did have field hockey practices, which were totally fun! I also found yoga in college, so add that awesomeness to the mix! But it was really moving to Colorado and my introduction to a daily outdoor activity that made exercising totally fun! Skinning up a mountain, hiking to alpine lakes, and trail running amidst the aspens made me anticipate my daily workouts! Don't get me wrong, I did and still do add gym workouts to the mix. But it's not an every-day-do-the-same-thing routine.

Sometimes I love going out by myself. It's nice to have the peace and quiet of the outdoors around me, or my own music playing in my ears as I do my own circuit training at the gym.

Sometimes it's a great way to get a hangout session in with a friend! Having a yoga/spin/hike/ski followed by coffee/wine/happy hour date with friends is the best way to spend time together. Plus, talking while hiking a steep hill will definitely add challenge to the cardio aspect.

My 3 tips to amp up the fun? Try something new, mix up your routine, and get a friend to join in! If you're doing at least one of these on a regular basis, you'll be having fun with your workouts in no time!

What's your favorite activity to do with a friend? Join the #holidaysweat fun! #sweatpink #getmemoving @fitapproach @runtothefinish @thememover

The Center of it All: The Core! #holidaysweat

Show us your favorite 3 core moves? Or how you incorporate core workouts in to your training?

This week, Run to the Finish and Sweat Pink are teaming up with Timex (Timex Sports to be exact) to talk about getting sweaty, staying healthy, and working the core!

1. Plank plank plank. Plank plank plank. Plank yo bootay!

Today we're featuring PLANK. There's no way we could have a week centered around the core and not talk about this amazing move. Not only is this move central to a vinyasa (high plank > chaturanga > upward-facing dog > downward-facing dog), but there are so many ways to switch up this basic pose to make sure you're always feeling the burn.

In classic high plank, aka high push-up, your shoulders are lined up directly over your wrists. Push the mat away while simultaneously hugging your shoulder blades toward one another. Low ribs and belly button are hugging in toward your spine while hips are neither tenting upward nor hammocking downward. Tailbone is reaching toward your heels, elongating your low back and helping hug in your abdominal muscles. Inner thighs are hugging in and up. Crown of the head and heart are reaching forward while heels are reaching back behind you, keeping your body in one long line. This is not just a core-centric pose, but really a full-body activator!

From here, you can take it so many places! Forearms down for forearm plank. Rapidly switching elbows to knees for mountain climbers. Opening to each side in side plank to make sure the side body gets some love too (see bottom picture above).

2. Inchworm

This is a SUPER hard core workout, and a great prep for any inversion press-up, especially handstand. There's no way to do these without activating the elusive low abs.

Starting in high plank with the feet on a blanket, drag the blanket toward your hands. Once they get as close to the wrists as possible, walk your hands back out in front of you to come back to high plank. Option to throw in a chaturanga push-up here. I usually have my students start on one side of the studio, traverse the room with these one time back and forth, or until they feel the burn. And then take 3 more.

3. Scissored Mountain Climbers

Whenever we do these in class, I always let my students know that I got this exercise from a fellow yoga teacher who has completed full Iron Man races and gets up at 3:30am every day to work out. Yeah, she's a total badass. And so is this variation of mountain climbers!

It's a little complex and you feel pretty uncoordinated at first. But after a few rounds, you get the hang of it and find your rhythm. Start in plank (see a pattern here?!) with your feet on a blanket. Lift your left foot up and take your left knee to your left elbow. From this point until the end of this side the left foot stays in the air and the right foot stays on the blanket. Kick your left foot back (it's still up in the air) as you drag your right knee toward your right elbow (foot is still on the blanket). And switch. And switch. I usually start my students with a MAX of 10, because don't forget you have the other side to do too.

4. Puppy Press

This is a new core exercise for me, and it's a way to get that much closer to a press-up handstand! Bring one foot on a block and plant your hands flat as close to the block as possible. Your other leg is lifted up in the air, and bent out to the side in nearly a straddle. Again, no way to attempt this without engaging the low abdominal muscles. You'll feel those babies fire up in no time. In theory, your hips are stacked directly over your shoulders, and your abs are strong and engaged enough to lift the bottom foot off the block.

Have you tried any of these before? What are your favorite core moves?! #holidaysweat #showyoucan #sweatpink @@timexsports @runtothefinish @fitapproach #ad

One of those days...

I'm having one of those days today. One of those days where you realize that you matter and you can make a difference. You don't have to be Mother Teresa or the head of a nonprofit or join the PeaceCorp in order to affect someone's life in a positive way. It can really be as small of a thing as a smile.

I had a fantastic morning. I spent my first 30 minutes awake still snuggled up in bed and busting out a bunch of Instagram and Facebook posts. I made it downstairs to boot up my computer while eating my favorite breakfast right now: Wild Friends Pumpkin Spice Peanut Butter (mine has chocolate chips in it!) with a banana, and topped with some Hemp Hearts from Manitoba Harvest. Yeah, totally yum. (Read below to find out more about my awesome breakfast!) Then it was off to my standing spin class at Burncycle PDX. It was as sweaty, intense, inspirational, fun, and killer as usual. I even got to have a lady boss coffee date afterwards with Jessi, which was totally awesome!

#womancrushwednesday, #wewearpink, #wearpinkwednesday...YUP!

So needless to say, I was in a great mood as I was running much overdue errands like picking up some packages and taking my bridesmaid's dress from Sam's wedding (which was over two months ago! eek!) to the dry cleaners. There is a woman who works at UPS who is always very efficient and polite, but rarely interacts. I've never seen her crack a smile in the 8 months I've had a mail box at this store. Today I went in there, high on endorphins, caffeine, and girltalk, and radiated high, happy energy all over her. She was in the middle of something, but took my package slips and told me she'd be able to get it in just a moment. I assured her I was in no rush and went on to explain for whatever reason (doesn't matter since I'm always oversharing anyways) that my coffee was kicking in and I was feelin' good. Not only did she crack a smile, but she also continued the conversation with me talking about what a good day it seemed I was having with spin class plus a coffee date and how much that combination rocks! Then she said, "bye, Elizabeth," as I stepped away from the counter. I had no idea she knew my name!

Interaction number 2: I found a dry cleaners right at the end of my street to take my dress to. An older gentleman walks up to the counter to complete my transaction. He's perfectly polite, but again, efficient and maybe even a bit stern. I would venture to say the lines on his face were not smile lines. But again, with my persistent bubbly mood, I got a hint of a smile during our brief interaction!

#stopdropandyoga handstand splits always helps make a great day, too!

Here's the moral of the story... Energy is contagious. You can affect others with your mood. Have you been around those chipper people when you're in an atrocious mood and you can't help but feel the lift at the corners of your mouth? YES! When you're going about your day, you have no idea what's going on in the lives, minds, spirits of others. But by sharing a smile, holding the door open for someone, asking how someone's day is going (and mean it!), telling someone you love her boots (and mean it!)... The ways of doing this is infinite, but by sharing your good mood, you help ensure that someone else has a good day. You might be the one source of brightness in an otherwise shitty day for someone. That's a lot of power people! So keep it in mind when you're out and about interacting with people around you. We all affect each other and have the power to shift someone's experience.

Interested in hearing more about my amazeballs breakfast?! Thanks to the partnership between Fit Approach and Manitoba Harvest, I got to try out Hemp Hearts! I know what you're thinking. I moved to Oregon from Colorado, and I'm having a product with the word "hemp" in it for breakfast. Not it's not what you think it is! Hemp is the same species but not the same thing as marijuana. Read more about hemp here

A Hemp Heart is literally a raw shelled hemp seed. They have a slightly nutty taste, and you can put them on whatever you want! I usually put mine on top of nut butter, yogurt, salads, and roasted veggies. I've seen a ton of people top their smoothies with them! (I know, I need to get back to making smoothies!) Other than the subtle flavor profile and texture you add to your dish, you're also getting great nutritional value:

  • Nutritious - per 30 gram serving, Hemp Hearts contain 10 grams of plant-based protein and 10 grams of Omegas.
  • Hemp Hearts have more protein and omegas and less carbs than the same serving of chia or flax.

Sweatin' into the holidays! #holidaysweat

Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by Sweat PinkRun to the Finish, and prAna but all opinions are my own. I truly appreciate all of the brands who support the Sweat Pink community!

I'm so excited to be participating in the annual #holidaysweat challenge with the Sweat Pink crew and Run to the Finish! This is the first year in quite a few that I haven't gone into the holiday season in a ski town. This time of year is usually spent in anticipation not only of the holidays but also of ski season! I'm only 90 minutes from the mountain here in Portland, but I'm used to it being literally in my backyard. I'm very used to being extremely active through the holiday season, but it's usually in the snow. So this challenge is exactly what I need to keep me motivated to get out of my snuggly blanket and to go be active!

Thanksgiving 2014
Today prAna asks us what number of minutes we're shooting for this week! I'm aiming for 600 minutes of activity! Today I got in 90 minutes with yoga and a trail run.

This week I'm also planning on hitting my favorite spin class, going on a runch date with a girlfriend, and all the yogas all over the place!

Take it or leave it; it's all an offering...

When I'm talking to people who are interested in trying yoga, I tell them to try multiple studios, teachers, and styles of yoga. That's one of the beautiful things about yoga these days, is that there's SO many different ways to do it! If you stick with it and shop around a bit, you'll find the style/studio/teacher that you vibe with.

Vibing with yoga is a beautiful thing. We all have had that teacher that we just love, that we leave her (or his!) class with our mind blown. She inspires us, pushes us, nurtures us. We sweat, move, breathe, feel, relax, and all of the sudden we get that yoga craze. We find the studio that feels like home, where we have a community of teachers and practitioners that come together in a beautiful way. And maybe a juice bar if you're lucky.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret: teaching yoga is like no other job out there. It's physical, the wellbeing of the practitioners and their experience is my focus, there's rigorous training and education that never ends, there's a lot of stigma with the field (both positive and negative), there's a historical spiritual and mental component... Teaching a class is both energizing and exhausting. I have to hold space for everyone in the class, which for my classes is a high energy, fun, upbeat space. While also leading them through a flow and making sure they are safe in their alignment. The style I teach is pretty common in the West, but is also definitely not the only type of yoga to be found by far.

Most yoga teachers have completed numerous trainings and have at the very least basic anatomical knowledge. Many meditate and have a daily practice in or out of a studio. Many also constantly continue their education and seek inspiration, whether it's a new pose from Instagram, a clinic or training with a teacher, or reading the latest Mary Oliver poem. Even with all of this, yoga teachers do not know it all! We know there is infinite amount of knowledge out there which can never be acquired. That's part of the beauty of it all.

A major part of our job is to share our experience with everything listed out above. We learn a new cue from another teacher, and try it out in our classes. We hear a new song on the radio and put it on our playlist. We use a mantra in our meditation and set that as the intention of our classes that week. We share our practice and inspirations with you, the students. When you walk through the door of the studio, unless you tell us otherwise, we have no idea what's going on in your life. When I talk about something before class, I don't know that you had a rough day, that you're going through a divorce, that all you want to do is flow. When I offer handstand in class, I have no idea that you're healing from a shoulder injury, that you're pregnant, that you've never tried handstand and are terrified.

When I show up to teach yoga class, I'm offering...pretty much everything. Every time I offer a pose, transition, or intention, it's just that: an offering. I openly say, "take it or leave it" in my class (always with a smile!). To please do what's best for your body today on your mat. When I share an intention, it's something that resonated with me in my practice or in my life recently. I'm not calling anyone out, I'm not trying to shove an idea down your throat, I'm not trying to turn class into a sermon. All I'm doing is giving you the option to think about an idea that has resonated with me lately during your practice.

And that's the kicker about being a yoga teacher. It's a part of me. When I'm teaching, I'm sharing a part of myself with my students. While setting an intention, I'm opening up to my classes by sharing personal stories and vulnerabilities. I am the teacher, and the teacher is me, a 26 year old, skiing/running/fitness junkie, handstand addict, overposter on Instagram, booty shaker, self-conscious, high energy ME!

If you can't say anything nice...

When you go to classes, you generally don't know what you're going to get. Even if you've been to a studio and a teacher hundreds of times, something will be subtlety or obviously different. Or maybe you're trying to find the teacher/studio/style of yoga that you love. Or maybe there's a sub for your regular class. Or maybe you're dealing with an injury or some tightness in your body. Something, every time on your mat is going to be different. Try to think of it as an adventure! You can learn something from every experience, whether you found your new favorite teacher or not. You're not going to vibe with everyone everywhere. You might not like a teacher's sequencing or playlist, the mural on the wall, the heat in the room. That's ok. There's something you can learn or appreciate about the situation, and you say "thank you" and move on. You maybe give it another go or your don't come back. There's no need to complain or criticize if it wasn't your thing. That's the teacher's style, a part of her that she's opening up and sharing with her classes. It's a very vulnerable position to be in and it's a beautiful thing when you can tell she's being totally authentic and genuine. There are going to be plenty of people that resonate with that teacher, just as there's a teacher/style/studio out there that you resonate with!

Namaste my OMies! Much love!
